Sisters Julie Ryan and Kristin Henaghan began working together more than two and a half decades ago, first at the Boston Design Center and now as owners of their own business, Classic Tile & Stone. “It actually would be weird not to work together,” says Ryan.
In 2003, the sisters, who are from the South Shore, recognized a need in their own backyard for a retail and design business that specializes in tile, glass and stone. “Before we opened there really wasn’t a showroom where you could get the lines we carry without having to make a trip into the Boston Design Center,” says Henaghan.
Classic Tile & Stone features products that cover a variety of styles in a range of price points. “I think one of the big misconceptions about the store is that we are just high-end,” says Ryan, “which is not true.” Henaghan adds: “One of the things we are really good at is working within someone’s budget. We can use the $5-per-square-foot tile, but put something else with it to create a very custom look without the client having to spend a ton of money.”
One of Henaghan’s and Ryan’s favorite products is a waterjet stone mosaic tile. “It’s a process in making stone mosaics that is more precise,” Henaghan explains, which creates cleaner, crisper edges. “It is very detailed now,” says Ryan. “It is a little more updated, fresher.”
While the showroom provides a well-culled selection of the latest products, special emphasis is put on offering timeless tile and design. “We are not looking to sell customers trendy stuff that in four or five years they are going to be asking themselves ‘Why did I buy that?,” says Ryan. “It’s right in our name: Classic Tile & Stone.”
The showroom also carries stone for patios, walkways and outdoor kitchens as well as for swimming pool and spa areas. Ryan quips, “If you can tile it, we can do it!”
Classic Tile & Stone is open year-round and offers tile and stone design services. Free in-home design consultations are available.
